A daughter’s call for help

Dear Mr. President,
United States of American
My name is Tran Le Bao Quan and I am the youngest daughter of Tran Huynh Duy Thuc, a prisoner of conscience in and respects human rights. I am writing this letter to you to express a daughter’s worry for her father’s life and to ask for your help.
It has been seven years since my dad was falsely arrested and imprisoned on the charge of “attempting to overthrow the state”. Since his arrest, our family of only 3 helpless women has been struggling because our husband and dad was
taken away. Despites the conviction, I fail to understand why my dad is imprisoned for speaking up about the truths concerning Vietnam’s economy and society. On his public blog, my dad wrote about the importance of preserving the environment to the sustainable development of a country, the risk of the stock market bubble that exploded when the recession happened, and how only human rights can push Vietnam’s growth momentu m forward. Now what my dad had alerted before is happening. Mr. President, I believe you should have known about the recent environmental pollution disaster that happened at the coast of Vietnam, resulting in the death of million fishes. This event stirs up a huge wave of people concern for the environmental future of Vietnam and the world at large. We all want to live in safe environment where we are not afraid of illnesses or death caused by basic supplies like food or water. We certainly do not want the next generation to have to deal with the issues that happen right now.
My dad has always been fighting for human rights and a safer society where people do not have to live in fear. He has continueds to do so even after his arrest in 2009. On May 14th, 2016, when my family travelled more than 1000km to visit him at Nghe An prison, where he was recently forcibly transferred to, he is determined that he shall commence a hunger strike from May 24th, 2016, to demand the government to respect the rule of law a nd human rights, and let the people vote for the form of government they want. Everything he has been doing is done out of his love for his country and now he is willing to die for this noble cause. While fundamental human rights like freedom of expression should be observed, my dad was unfairly and arbitrarily convicted and inhumanely mistreated. I believe that he had done nothing
wrong.
My father shall commence an indefinite hunger strike. It shocked our family and brought every person to tears. He said in tears that if anything happened to him, then it would be for his country, and for people’s fundamental rights. Though he told to me to trust and have faith in him, I cannot let my dad risk his life. To many people my dad is an opposition leader, but to me he is just my loving dad, an innocent, kind and gentle man. The pain of losing the father is unbearable to any children. He is an important person to me and my family and we need him in our lives, and I believe so does this country. Despites many challenges and difficulties, he continues to fight for human rights and his belief has never been shaken.
Dear President Obama, you have always prioritized your agendas for human rights and I hope that this time you will do
the same in your visit to Vietnam. I humbly ask for your help to protect my dad. Please, President Obama, save my dad!
